Ira Singhal is a computer science engineer from India. She completed her B.Tech from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology and her master’s in business administration from the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi. Born in Meerut, Ira has scoliosis which causes her spine to be curved. While it limits her ability to move her arms and legs, it does not interfere with her vision. Her rigid will and determination to achieve helped her to overcome her challenges and excel in her studies.
She first applied for the UPSC exam in 2010 and was denied a seat for disability. She scored 62 percent in the examination, but the UPSC refused to offer her a seat in their department because she did not meet the disability categories. Ira Singhal argued that this decision violated Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution. After a long battle at the Central Administrative Tribunal, she was finally inducted as an assistant commissioner in the customs and central excise service. Today, she is a Brand Ambassador for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Although Ira Singhal has scoliotic spondylosis, she has overcome her physical limitations to become an accomplished businesswoman. She studied at the University of Delhi and at the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, which is affiliated with the University of Delhi. She went on to get her MBA from FMS Delhi and topped the UPSC exam in 2015.
After this story went viral, Singhal’s phone started ringing. People at the Department of Personnel and Training called to tell her that they want to meet with her. The Department had earlier rejected her application for a post on the IRS because of her scoliosis. The discrimination she faced led to her filing a case in the Central Administrative Tribunal. In 2014, she finally got the position she had hoped for.
